The Prayers of an Atheist: Why Bother if Nobody is Listening?
Prayer is a practice that has been abandoned by Atheist around the world. The apparent lack of a specific agent capable of initiating change has, in the mind of the Atheist, rendered the act of prayer a pointless exercise. Prayer, minus the presence of an overseeing mind that monitors the contents of each individual prayer and, takes action in response to that contents of those prayers nullify any reason to initiate prayer.
But…
One of the fundamental principles of Eternalism is a complete an utter rejection of this position. On the contrary, we believe that the prayers of an Atheist are in fact the most useful prayers of all.
When an Atheist prays for the sick, for the homeless, for victims of disaster or simply prays for a better world for their children to grow up in, in the absence of a supernatural being who is able to act on behalf the individual, it is the individual that must take on the primary role as the agent for change. An Atheist cannot delegate responsibility to an unseen higher power and therefore must take action to initiate change on their own behalf.
The Atheist who prays every day for the homeless is faced with the option of either:
a. doing nothing
b. taking action.
Prayer by Design
The daily prayer of Eternalism is a generalised prayer that encourages behaviour that is beneficial to the individual and to others. It is designed to be used as an opening and closing sequence of a daily five-minute prayer session.
After the Eternalism sequence has been completed, it is the responsibility of the individual to select a subject of prayer that they feel strongly about and would like to take action.
- Happiness for family members
- Feeding the poor
- Education for the underprivileged
- Improving the environment
Once you have chosen a subject, it is recommended that you continue praying about the same subject for a minimum of 12 months and taking action whenever possible. During your 5 minutes of prayer, you can either create a positive emotional state surrounding your chosen subject or cause or you can think about practical steps you can take to make a difference with your chosen cause.
If you would like to be assigned a subject for prayer please contact us and we will assign a subject to you and assist you with advice on how you can facilitate change.
The Daily Prayer
To you, who are lost to me, a stranger on the street, a face among the crowd.
In how many worlds have I loved you?
Mother, father, daughter, son, lover.
In how many worlds has every beat of my heart been tied to your fate.
Our joys and sorrows intertwined.
Yet in this life, destined never to meet.
It is for you that I will make the world a better place.
I will do my best to be kind.
I will show compassion.
I will help those in need.
I will aid those who are suffering.
For I do not recognize my love in this world.
But I know that they are here.
So to you my love, even though there is no way for me to remember you. I love you as I once did in another life.
And I will give that love to the world, in the hope that it may find you.
The daily prayer is subject to the 50-year rule. The current version of the Eternalism prayer is in a phase of review and as such, it is subject to change until the 1st of January 2020. As of January 1st, 2020, the prayer will not be eligible for change until January 1st 2070.
Disclaimer:
The daily prayer is intended to be a conditioning device used to adjust your attitude and increase your level of adherence to the philosophies and ethical values of Eternalism.
We believe that the use of repetitive prayer can be used as psychological tool to increase and reinforce adherence to a particular belief structure. More research is required into the lasting psychological and physical effect on the brain of prayer and/or affirmations in order to negate the inherent danger of inciting fanaticism and overzealous inclinations that can arise from excessive repetitive prayer and/or affirmation use.
It is important to aware of the inclination of the human mind to mistake the euphoria that can be attained through pray for external or supernatural forces.
Please refer to our Mental Health Warning before commencing any form of Daily Prayer.
We have tried, to the best of our abilities, to create a Daily Prayer that is benevolent and filled with positive reinforcements.
With this information in mind, it is hoped that followers of Eternalism will still adhere to the practice of the daily prayer for at least five minutes per day in the knowledge that the potential psychological conditioning contained within the prayer has been created to benefit adherents with a focus on encouraging self-improvement increasing understanding of the natural world.
